Coffee Shop Sugar Scrub

Many of my friends know me for my homemade sugar/coffee scrubs, I swear it's how I keep my skin clear and soft. These scrubs, especially the coffee scrubs are blowing up right now. You can't go on social media without someone advertising for another coffee scrub company. It's because these scrubs really work and make you feel and smell amazing. Lucky for you I am going to let you in on their "not-so-secret" recipe for these amazing scrubs.

Use your mom's favorite coffee grounds your homemade scrub.

Use your mom's favorite coffee grounds your homemade scrub.

It is very simple, I just scavenge what I have around the house to make my scrubs. The two ingredients that are necessary are an oil of your choice and an exfoliator of your choice. Anything you add after that is a “boost” and you can go as simple or crazy as you want here. For the oil, my “go to” is a therapeutic grade fractionated coconut oil. I have a lot of friends who also use the Neutrogena light sesame oil, which works great too.  Open up those kitchen cabinets, olive oil or avocado oil, whatever you might find. I recommend organic whenever possible since you are applying this directly to your skin. I tend to stay away from canola/peanut oil unless certified organic.

Organic cane sugar crystals.

Organic cane sugar crystals.

Next, you want the exfoliator, my recommendation is any large grain sugar (sugar in the raw is a popular one) or salt can work just as well too. I also love coffee grounds, they are packed full of antioxidants and it smells like you are in a coffee shop. A sugar/coffee ground mix is my favorite to use. From there, I like to add things like vitamin e oil or essential oils. You can also add other things like ginger and lime, cinnamon and clove, lavender and rose hips, just to name a few of my recipes.

I like to follow with a gentle face moisturizer.

I like to follow with a gentle face moisturizer.

This is when you can really get really creative with what is just laying around the house; just mix ingredients together to desired consistency. No right or wrong amount of anything. Use on your face, feet, hands, arms, and legs. It is a great lip scrub too, giving you the softest lips!

Scrub those lips too!

Scrub those lips too!

TO USE: Wet skin, apply and work scrub into skin. Gently scrub for 1-3 minutes, and rinse very well with warm water and washcloth. You will almost feel slimy the first time you do this since you have taken all the dead skin off and you have left-over oil on your skin too.  Your skin will feel so soft. Use a towel to pat dry and remove any excess oil on your skin, especially if you plan to wear your Lizzy James wrap bracelet. Oils, perfumes, and other beauty products can damage the anti-tarnish coating on silverplate pieces. See more Lizzy James wrap bracelet care information here After that, just enjoy the softness of your skin!

Twinkle Toes Foot Soak

Epsom salt is the best for this. But if you don’t have that just hot water can feel great. I also recommend adding lemon or chamomile tea if you have some too, a great little detox.

Great adds for your soak or scrub recipe.

Great adds for your soak or scrub recipe.

Simply fill a tub big enough for your feet of water. (you can even just use your bath tub) add one to two cups of Epsom salt and any extras you might want, and soak for 10 minutes.  I highly recommend using the sugar/coffee scrub here too, it feels amazing on your feet and will make them smell amazing. Why not top it off by polishing your nails together after?

Hot Towel Facial

You really can’t go wrong with this spa treatment. Anyone can do it too; all you need is a hand towel or washcloth and hot water. Applying a hot towel to the face and shoulders feels so good and relaxing. It can relieve tension in head, neck, and shoulders. It definitely can help with those nasty tension headaches too. It is also great for your skin.

Some nice and clean towels ready for use.

Some nice and clean towels ready for use.

I know there is a long explanation of the science behind these benefits, but basically, the water heated towel relaxes muscles, opens your pores, kills bacteria, puts natural steam moisture back in, and makes your skin happy. I like to follow with a gentle face moisturizer.

Try one, or try them all at once, it is really up to you. I hope this can be a fun and easy way to spend some time with the special mom in your life.

National Zucchini Bread Day

It is National Zucchini Bread Day today! Although some may celebrate on the 23rd as well, I don’t mind…zucchini bread is so good it deserves two days.

From my experimenting with zucchini bread, I fell in love with this altered version of the recipe from RealSimple.com! I love their magazine too. Original recipe here

MMMM…look at that marbled goodness!

I swear not all the recipes on here will have greens involved, but you really cannot go wrong with good ol’ zucchini bread. Especially when there is chocolate involved too. And right now is the perfect time to make it: National Zucchini Bread Day.

Chocolate marble layers.

Chocolate marble layers.

Zucchini bread is a great comfort food. It takes me back to my childhood.  My mom used to bake this bread in these star-shaped metal baking pans then sliced them into adorable star slices.

Zucchinis are another one of those “imposter” veggies, as they are actually fruits. Think it is strange? The best way to think about it is- Zucchinis are squash just like pumpkins, and they grow on the ground with the crazy, swirly vine-like branches. Have you ever noticed cantaloupe and other melons grow the same way? They are all related fruits.

Zucchini plant in my garden

Zucchini plant in my garden

I love how easy this recipe is. It’s a great way to use up extra zucchini, I buy huge bags of organic zucchini from Costco and this recipe helps make sure I do not waste any of them.

Why does Zucchini bread always taste so moist and soft? This is from the extra moisture that zucchinis provide and release while baking!

The original recipe calls for canola oil, I switched to organic coconut oil. I prefer this oil for its flavor and the nutritional benefits that canola oil lacks. I also added the option for chocolate chips or nuts, since some people just love it. I also added my own small recipe for a lemon icing if you really want to sweeten things up!

Lemon Icing dripping down freshly baked zucchini bread.

Lemon Icing dripping down freshly baked zucchini bread.

½ cup plus 2 teaspoons coconut oil, plus more for the pan

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour (7 ounces)

5 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted

1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon baking powder

1 cup sugar

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract

2 packed cups shredded zucchini (9 ounces)

½ cup chocolate chips or nuts (optional)

1.    Heat oven to 350° F. Brush an 8½-by-4½-inch loaf pan with oil and dust with flour, tapping out the excess.

2.   Stir together the chocolate and 2 teaspoons of the coconut oil. Set aside to cool to room temperature.

3.   Whisk together the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.

4.   In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining ½ cup coconut oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Stir in the zucchini. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk vigorously to combine, about 1 minute. Add nuts or chocolate chips, if desired.

5.    Transfer half the batter to the prepared pan. Pour half the chocolate into the pan. Repeat with the remaining batter and chocolate. Using a toothpick, swirl the chocolate and batter together to create a marbled pattern. Make sure to incorporate the batter at the bottom.

6.   Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 60 to 70 minutes. Cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely.

Emily's Lemon Icing/Glaze

2 cups powdered sugar

¼ cup fresh lemon juice

Zest of 1-2 lemons

1 drop pure lemon essential oil (optional)

1.    Mix together until smooth. Add hot water if you need to thin out.

2.   Let icing/glaze melt over Zucchini Bread, once it's cool enough to pull out of the pan.

3.   Let the icing harden.

4.   Ready to serve!

I hope you enjoy this delicious day!

What the Kale! Brownies

What the Kale!?

Having ingredients measured out ahead of time makes the baking process much smoother!

Having ingredients measured out ahead of time makes the baking process much smoother!

Hello Moist, Fudgy Brownies!

I will be completely honest with you, I have a raging sweet tooth! Ask my family, ask my husband, it’s a problem.

Okay, okay we all know it is important to eat your “green” food too…

Give me all the chocolate!

Give me all the chocolate!

But lets be real, what is more important is finding a way to make greens taste good! And for this wonderful recipe, you won't taste them at all!

Fresh kale from the local market

An Excuse to Eat Chocolate? Yes Please!

It is a great excuse to eat brownies! This hidden green boost gives you a little something to feel good about! Great for moms who have picky eaters in the family too! (You also don’t have to tell your kids what you put inside those brownies they are chowing down on.)

This is no April fools joke, these brownies have kale in them!

This is no April fools joke, these brownies have kale in them!

Kale Me Crazy!

It all started when my friend Sam gave me a “what the kale!” tank top a couple of years ago.  I had been going crazy with kale that summer. I had been growing tons of it in my garden and I was running out of ideas of what to do with it!

"What the Kale!" Tank.

"What the Kale!" Tank.

A few years prior, I had perfected a brownie recipe adapted from one I was taught in a beginning cooking class back in high school.

The new shirt sparked an idea. Why not hide some kale in the brownies?!

After a few tries, I came up with a rich, fudgy, gooey brownie that is now a family favorite!

I am so excited to share them with you!

Viola! Your perfect size brownie!

Viola! Your perfect size brownie!

Freshly Frosted Brownies !

Freshly Frosted Brownies!

The Recipe…

½ Cup, Butter

3 oz, Bittersweet Chocolate

½ Cup, White Sugar

½ Cup, Brown Sugar

2, Large Eggs

1 teaspoon, Vanilla

½ Bunch, Kale (about 1/3 cup pureed) **you can use spinach too!**

½ Cup, Flour

5 Tablespoons, Cocoa Powder

½ teaspoon, Baking Powder

Pinch of Salt

½ Cup, Chocolate Chips

¼ Cup, Shredded Coconut or Nuts

1 ½ Cup, Powdered Sugar

3 Tablespoon, Cocoa Powder

1-2 Tablespoons, Milk (or half and half/heavy cream)

½ t, Vanilla

1.     Preheat oven to 350°

2.     Line baking cups…or 9x9 pan works too (plan to bake it longer for pan)

3.     Double boil the butter and bittersweet chocolate (melt ingredients in metal bowl over pot of simmering water, do not let water touch bowl)

4.     Remove from heat

5.     Add both sugars, wait a few minutes, stir until smooth.

6.     Puree kale and vanilla until very smooth, no chunks in food processor or immersion blender.

7.     Add eggs to puree and mix well

8.     Gently fold puree mixture into chocolate mixture

9.     In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt

10.  Pour the chocolate mixture into flour mixture. Gently fold together.

11. Add chocolate chips and coconut/nuts.

12.  Fill cups ½-¾ full.

13. Bake 15 minutes, test, cover with foil if the tops are looking dry, then usually another 15-25 min.  Every oven is different, so the last baking time varies.

14. Combine all icing ingredients until smooth.

15. Add more milk or powdered sugar to get desired consistency

16. Frost brownies with about 1 T of Icing per brownie while warm to get a smooth glazed effect.

17. Let cool completely.

18. Enjoy! :)

Memorial Day Recipes

What's the one thing at Lizzy James we love almost as much as a wrap bracelet? Food! Namely, good food. There are few places in this world that evoke memories of simple, American fare than a bbq outside with friends.

We've scoured the Internet (Pinterest, specifically :) ) to find some of the best recipes fit for a Memorial Day bbq! Stay tuned to the blog for Memorial Day style inspiration tomorrow!

White Peach Sangria

  • ½ of a cup Brandy
  • ¼ of a cup Sugar (or more to taste)
  • 2 bottles White Wine (a fruity, zesty wine works best i.e. Riseling, Pinot Grigio, Sauvigon Blanc)
  • 3 tablespoons Lemon Juice
  • 6 White Peaches (diced)
  • 2 Lemons (cut into slices)
  • 1 Lime (cut into slices)
  • ½ cup Blueberries
  • ½ of a cup halved Strawberries (about 15 small strawberries)
  • ½ to 1 cup Seltzer Water / Soda Water (optional)
  • 2 cups Ice Cubes
  1. In a large punch bowl or pitcher stir together brandy and sugar until sugar dissolves.
  2. Add white wine and all the fruit and give it a quick stir.
  3. Leave in refrigerator overnight for the flavor of the fruit to mix together with the alcohol.
  4. When ready to serve, add seltzer water and more sugar, if needed.Top off with ice cubes to keep chilled.
  5. If you are planning on serving it straight away, skip placing the bowl in the fridge and add seltzer water to taste (optional) and ice cubes. Serve!

BBQ Chicken Kebabs

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sweet paprika
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 4 teaspoons sugar
  • 2-3 slices raw bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce
  1. Trim chicken of excess fat, then cut the chicken into 1-inch cubes. In a large bowl, toss the chicken with the salt. Then cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour.
  2. Turn all grill burners to high, close lid, and heat for about 15 minutes. Leave primary burner on, but turn off other burners.
  3. Meanwhile, pat the chicken dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, combine the paprikas and sugar. Place the raw bacon in a food processor and pulse for about 30-45 seconds, until a smooth paste forms, scraping down the sides of the bowl twice throughout. Add the bacon paste and spice mixture to the chicken. Mix with hands or spatula until the ingredients are blended and chicken is coated. Thread the chicken onto the skewers, rolling or folding as needed to maintain 1-inch cubes.
  4. Grill the chicken over the primary burner with lid closed, turning one-quarter of a turn every 2 minutes or so, until browned and slightly charred (about 8 minutes total for chicken breast and 10 minutes for thighs). Brush the top of kebabs with BBQ sauce; flip and cook until sauce is browned in spots, about 1 minute. Brush second side with sauce; flip and cook for another minute or so, until cooked through.
  5. Remove kebabs from grill and let rest for 5 minutes. Serve, passing remaining BBQ sauce separately, if desired.

Pulled Pork Sliders

  • 1 3-5 pound pork shoulder (mine was 3.75 lbs)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Garlic Powder
  • Your favorite barbecue sauce (I used Sweet Baby Ray's)
  • Slider buns

  • ¾ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic (about 1 garlic clove)
  • 2 pinches of black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives (I used Gourmet Herbs slightly dried chives)
  1. Generously season the pork shoulder with salt, pepper and garlic powder, and rub pork shoulder with your favorite barbecue sauce (I used a pastry brush to help me do this). Place in a slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours. Once cooked, remove pork shoulder and slightly shred - discard any fatty parts. Careful no to shred the pork too much - you want nice chunks of pork on your sandwich. Add about ½ cup to 1 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce and gently mix.
  2. To make the aioli, add all the ingredients to a bowl and mix.
  3. Toast the slider buns in the oven at 375 for a few minutes until crispy.
  4. Assemble sliders by adding the pork on the bun and topping with a dollop of aioli.

I don’t know about you guys, but here at Lizzy James we are thrilled that spring time has finally arrived! Even though we’re based in San Diego, and some of you east coasters are probably laughing at our jacket wearing in 60 degree weather, we can’t wait to trade our jeans and sweaters for skirts and blouses.

Let us know below how these turned out for you :)

Healthy Muffins

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup + 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup low-fat greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (you may use another fat percentage if preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup olive OR coconut oil (if using coconut oil, be sure it is above room temperature and melted)
  • 1 cup blueberries

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees (F).
  2. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl whisk together flours, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon; set aside.
  4. In a medium bowl whisk together the yogurt, milk, vanilla, eggs, honey, and oil.
  5. Gently fold the yogurt mixture into the flour mixture, and using a spatula, fold until combined, being sure to mix just until all the flour disappears. Fold in blueberries.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared muffin tins, place pan in the oven, and bake for 18 minutes, reducing the heat to 375 degrees after 9 minutes of baking.
  7. Allow the muffins to cool for 5 minutes in the pan before carefully transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Vegan Thai Iced Tea

  • 4 cups (960 ml) filtered water
  • 2 heaping Tbsp loose leaf black tea*
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) maple syrup or agave nectar
  • 1/4 cup (55 g) packed light muscovado sugar, organic brown sugar, or coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 14-ounce (414 ml) can light coconut milk (or sub vanilla almond milk, rice milk, or other milk of choice)
  • optional: 1-2 Tbsp (15-30 ml) dark rum per serving (for a cocktail option)

  1. In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, remove from heat and allow bubbles to subside, then add tea and stir. Let steep for 5 minutes.
  3. Pour tea over a strainer into a pitcher or bowl to remove the tea leaves. At this time add maple syrup, muscovado sugar and vanilla. Whisk to thoroughly combine and dissolve sugar crystals, then sample and adjust sweetness as needed. Set in the refrigerator to chill (2-3 hours).
  4. Once tea is chilled, prepare serving glasses with generous portions of ice (see photo). Fill with tea until 3/4 full, then top with coconut milk. Stir gently and enjoy.
  5. Recipe yields enough for 4 generous servings. Add dark rum to taste to make it a creamy cocktail
