Help After Harvey

TEXAS DISASTER RELIEF

To our Loyal Customers and Friends of Lizzy James,

We truly feel like we are all part of a close community here, be it locally at our home base or across the country on our social media platforms. So we are asking you to help us help our neighbors in Houston.

Lizzy James is donating a percentage of all profits to Houston Food Bank starting immediately through September 30.

An unprecedented number of people in the greater Houston area are affected by the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

The storm unleashed monumental destruction across southeast Texas.

For individuals who already struggle to provide for their family’s basic needs, the flooding is even more catastrophic.

How does the Houston Food Bank help people affected by Harvey?

The Houston Food Bank has a history of providing disaster relief, but we've never seen devastation on this scale.

They provide food and supplies in the short term and for many months to come to residents in southeast Texas who will struggle to rebuild their lives.

Donations can be sent via this link - http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/

We thank you for your support!

Shelter to Soldier, Saving Two Lives at a Time

With the kick off to summer joined along with this holiday, we see lots of parades, flags waving, BBQs, planting or buying poppies(the official Memorial Day flower) all to not be overlooked for the reason this day was established, to honor those heroes who have passed while protecting us and our country.

A brief historical look at this day; “Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the United State's armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.” (source)

To celebrate and support our troops, we have joined with a local non-profit organization named Shelter to Soldier to help raise money for their cause this Memorial Day Weekend.

Shelter to Soldier is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that adopts dogs from local shelters and rescue organizations and trains them to become psychiatric service dogs for post-9/11 combat veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other injuries associated with traumatic service experiences.

SHELTER TO SOLDIER: MAKING AN IMPACT

It is such a beautiful idea of saving two lives at once. Please take a look at the impact this amazing non-profit has on our community. And make sure to visit Shelter to Soldier’s website for more information.

It is important to look at the numbers. Every 69 minutes and U.S. veteran commits suicide. Every day about 3200 dogs are euthanized nationwide. There is something we can do to help. By joining together, these dogs and soldiers are able to heal and become healthy, active members of our society again.

“Handlers learn to communicate effectively with their dog to create a loving bond while learning all commands and service dog laws/regulations to prepare them for a life with a service animal.”

How Donations Are Used

“Shelter to Soldier has amazing community support and a strong volunteer team behind us. Thanks to these relationships, we are able to direct the vast majority of revenue to programs and services. Our steady growth has allowed us to build a strong leadership and administrative team to run the program efficiently. We believe in making each donor dollar go as far as possible to make our program impact the lives of more dogs and veterans in need.”

12 months and $12,000 can save two lives at a time.

“Each service dog/veteran team costs our program $12,000 from adoption to graduation. This includes the adoption, housing, medical care, grooming, food, treats, training, training equipment, bedding, toys, testing, handling training, service dog equipment and documents, graduation and materials for the veteran recipient and service dog pair.”

Stay Tuned!

Make sure to check back as we update you regularly on more charities we support financially with a detailed report of where the money goes.

We also actively follow up on the actual impact the charity is having like at Helen Woodward Animal Center.

"Because of charitable gifts from donors like you, we had yet another, record-breaking year in 2016 with 3,390 orphan cats and dogs finding their forever homes.  We’re grateful for your support in making this possible. The Center works with over 40 transfer partners to rescue orphans that are running out of time and options. 95% of the pets we take into our care come from these often overcrowded facilities, but then we are able to provide them with food, shelter, medical care, and that second chance at finding a forever home. Your gift gives us the resources to care for some of the most vulnerable pets, like this young kitten who was literally, thrown away:

Lego was found frantically crying by a person just passing by the area. She was hidden by a lot of fur, which was troubling and a little strange. Upon further investigation, the person discovered that Lego was keeping herself warm under the bodies of her dead family. Her siblings and mother had all died in their sleep, huddled together, likely of poison, and only little Lego was left alive. She was taken away from that horrible scene and placed in a Lego box, then brought to us. She was the only one left in her family…

When Lego arrived at the Center, she was underweight, dehydrated and very frail. We knew that her chances of survival would greatly increase if she had siblings to keep warm with, and it just so happened we had a litter of orphaned kittens fit for the job, but would they accept her?

It became obvious that Libra and Pisces accepted little Lego immediately. She was drawn into the warm, sleepy kitten pile and dozed off with her new “adopted” siblings. Together, they ate, slept, and played until they were old enough to find their forever homes.

Lego’s life was saved because of your dedicated support. Thank you again for your very generous gift and for making a difference."

For a more humane world,

Lizzy James' Story

Lizzy James' Story

At the end of 2011, Lizzy James was at a crossroads. She had a successful career as a studio photographer, but was now unable to lift any of the equipment after a double mastectomy. It was time to switch careers.

Jewelry making became her new calling. It became a creative outlet that helped her to deal with rigorous medical treatments. Her goal was to create affordable, practical pieces that easily transition from one outfit to another. After a ton of thought and much deliberation, the Lizzy Wrap bracelet and necklace was born.

She converted her closed photography studio into a full-fledged jewelry store showcasing local artisan pieces, including her own. Her pieces flew off the shelves, and she knew she was onto something.

Lizzy then decided to take her pieces to a trade show in San Francisco, CA, and the response was tremendous: Lizzy James Designs was the result.

Watch the video below to see the story unfold!

Today, give your pup an extra pat, because today is their day!

If you're a retailer, there's no better way to get to know the Lizzy James brand then to interact with Lizzy and Mordy at a trade show! During show season, they are constantly traveling around the country to meet retailers, show off pieces, and share Lizzy's inspiring story. They spend hours setting up booths that display our wraps and earrings in their best light, and love talking to all of the people who stop by!

The best way to stay on top of their schedule is to subscribe to our Lizzy James email blasts that keep everyone up to date on what's happening in the Lizzy James world. It's a great way to keep track of everything that's going on!

Lizzy James Gives Back

Here at Lizzy James, we are so happy to be in a place as a company where we can give back to the community. There are so many great causes out there to contribute to, from animals to children to vets. It's so important to appreciate the community we came from, and it's very empowering to make even a little bit of difference.

The chance to donate is one of the things that we've been most excited about lately, so we figured we share some of our excitement with you guys! We plan to continue donating to various causes throughout the year to give back to people who deserve it!

Below, you can read a bit about some of the charities we donated to, as well as recent plan to donate for Memorial Day!

Wounded Warrior Project

Lizzy James has decided to donate $5 for every order placed this Memorial Day to the Wounded Warrior Project in an effort to support our veterans. Wounded Warrior serves to empower veterans while raising public awareness in support of the cause. They aim to help wounded veterans, as well as help wounded veterans to assist each other outside of the battlefield.

"Wounded Warrior Project provides free programs and services focused on the physical, mental, and long-term financial well-being of this generation of injured veterans, their families and caregivers."

Helen Woodward Animal Center

Helen Woodward was founded by Helen Whittier Woodward in 1972 as a place that would facilitate comprehensive animal care alongside public education programs. Most of the buildings that stand at the Center to day were built after her death in 1983, and the Center was renamed in 1986 to honor her memory. Today, Helen Woodward Animal Center is regarded as one of the premier no-kill animal shelter and veterinary clinics in San Diego County!

"Helen Woodward Animal Center's passionate belief that animals help people and people help animals through trust, unconditional love, and respect, creates a legacy of caring. Sharing this philosophy with others, the Center inspires and teaches, locally and globally, the importance of the animal-human bond."

Susan G. Komen San Diego

Our donation to Susan G. Komen was inspired by Lizzy James' own struggle with breast cancer, and is a cause very close to our hearts. Komen San Diego is dedicated to achieving a world without breast cancer, and is currently the only organization in San Diego that continues the fight against breast cancer across all levels.

"We have one clear mission: saving lives and ending breast cancer forever."

Make a Wish Foundation San Diego

Founded in 1980, Make a Wish has continuously given joy to children with life threatening medical conditions. Make a Wish San Diego grants wishes to children within San Diego and Imperial county.

"A wish experience can be a game-changer for a child with a life-threatening medical condition."
